South Dakota-Mt. Rushmore

We left Cheyenne, WY and  traveled 271 miles to Hermosa, South Dakota on Tuesday June 28th.   Heartland RV Park  just 16 miles south of Rapid City was our base for the next 9 days.  This was the first campground to honor our Passport America discount card  for the entire stay which is vey unusual.

Our first trip out into the Black Hills was on Wednesday morning to see Mount Rushmore.  Many more full days of driving and sight seeing in this area allowed us to mark several items off of our bucket list under "Seeing America".

If you would like to go back in time to one of America's retro date nights then Hermosa has just the right place for you.  Roy's Black Hills Twin Drive-In Theater opens at 6:30 and  movies start at dusk.
The drive-in theater opened last summer and has been received well by the locals and the tourist that come to the area.

Shrine of Democracy - One of the largest sculptures in the world.  It measures 250 feet across and each head is 60 feet tall.  The noses of the four presidents  are approximately 21 feet long and the mouths are about 18 feet wide.

Our first glimpse of Mount Rushmore in the distance.

The Black Hills - a million acres.

The Black Hills is one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America.

"Until the wind and the rain alone shall wear them away."  Famous words of sculptor Gutzon Borglum used to describe the length of time his work will endure.

We definitely were not expecting these tunnels.
