Amarillo,TX

After a few departure date set backs we were finally able to pull out on Wednesday June 8th.  This trip has been on our bucket list for many years to spend some time in the west and northwest region of America.

We traveled from Sulphur, LA to Greenville, TX on Wednesday spending our first night at the East Texas RV Park.  This park was a nice place to stay for overnight offering full hookups for only $25 a night.  There had been a fire in the rv park the week before that caused total losses to 4 campers and damaged several other campers and vehicles from the ashes.  The manager of the park could hardly talk about the fire without becoming very emotional.

Thursday was a travel day for us making it to Quanah, TX.  We stayed at the Ole Town Cotton Gin RV Park for the night.  We arrived at the Amarillo Ranch RV Park on Friday afternoon and stayed through the weekend taking in a few of the main attractions in Amarillo.  The highlight of our stay was the outdoor musical drama Texas at Palo Duro Canyon State Park.  This is a must see if you are in the Amarillo area.

Ready to roll.

A sad site to see.  This fifth wheel was gone in 9 minutes.

The Big Texan Steak House home of the Free 72oz Steak.

The 72oz steak meal challenge includes not only the 72oz steak but also baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail and roll.  Eat the meal in one hour or less and your meal is free.  This gentleman did not win the challenge but hats off to him for trying.  Molly Schuyler a 120 pound mother of four holds the 72oz Steak World Record - devoured three  72oz steaks (plus sides) in 20 minutes.

Sidewalks around the steakhouse.

Cadillac Ranch standing along Route 66 west of Amarillo.  It was invented and built by a group of art-hippies and Amarillo billionaire Stanley Marsh 3.  The Cadillacs have now been in the ground as art longer than they were on the road.

Bring your spray paint you won't get in trouble for painting graffiti.

Looks like my sister Mona left her mark at Cadillac Ranch.

Palo Duro Canyon the second largest canyon in the country.

The canyon is 120 miles long, 20 miles wide and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet.

"Palo Duro" means "hard wood" in Spanish, was named for the canyon's abundant mesquite and juniper trees.

Nature has a way of drawing out one's spiritual feelings.

The wind blowing through the canyon satisfied your sense of feeling while your sense of sight was overwhelmed with all the beauty.

Entrance to the amphitheater.  President Obama ordered the flags flown at half-staff honoring the victims of the Orlando night club mass shooting June 12, 2016.

The stage for the musical "Texas".  The show started at 8:30PM and ended at 11:00PM.  The patriotic tribute to America, our veterans and military was outstanding.  The breathtaking settings and great props made this a night we will always remember.
